Welcome to the Mysore (Mysuru) city

Mysuru is one of the biggest city in the state of Karnataka and also the cleanest city of Karnataka. Mysore is commonly described as the ‘City of Palaces’, and there are seven palaces including the world famous ‘Mysore Palace’. Thanks to royal patronage (Mysore Maharajas), artists, writers and craftsmen have flourished in Mysuru, making it the cultural epicenter of Karnataka. Mysuru still retains an aura of old world charm and much of the city’s architectural heritage remains intact.

MYSORE PALACE

Designed by the English Architect, Henry Irwin, the Mysuru Palace dominates the skyline of Mysuru. A three storied structure in the Indo-Saracenic style built between 1897-1912; The palace is illuminated on Sundays, Public Holidays as well as during the Dasara Celebrations when 97,000 electric bulbs are used to illuminate it. Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, with more than 6 million annual visitors.

VISITING TIME: • Every day from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm

• 10 mins from the city central railway station
• 5 mins from the suburb bus-stand;
• 30 mins from Mysore Airport.
• The domestic airport is directly connected to the international airports of Bangalore (Kempegowda International Airport), Chennai (Chennai International Airport), Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum International Airport), Hyderabad (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport), Mangalore (Mangalore international airport) and Goa, (Goa International Airport, GOI).

CHAMUNDI HILLS
The Chamundi hills in Mysore, is a top tourist magnet that draws in photographers, nature lovers and Hindu devotees, every day of the year. The Chamundi hill top provides a breathtaking view of the Mysore city and one can very well identify the Mysore Maharaja Palace and the Karanji Lake, from the hill top. Chamundi hills is located 13 kms off the city of Mysore. The hills are elevated about a kilometer from the sea level. The Chamundeswari temple is located at the hill top. As legends say, goddess Chamundi Devi (Chamundeswari) killed a demon in this place and that is how the place got its name. The very ancient Mahabaleshvara temple is also present in the Chamundi hills and is a pilgrimage site, Mahabalachala is the real name of the Chamundi hills, according to mythology. A statue of demon Mahishasura, is present in the Chamundeswari temple.

HOW TO REACH: The nearest airport to Mysore is the Mysore domestic Airport. It is well connected to Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Goa airports. It is easy to reach Mysore from Bangalore by road (4hrs). Mysore is connected by buses and trains to all prominent cities in South India. After reaching Mysore, one can take a taxi or local bus to the foot of the Chamundi hills which is around 30mins from city.

St. PHILOMENA CATHEDRAL
Recognized as the second tallest church of Asia, St. Philomena’s Church was constructed to pay tribute to the Catholic Saint and martyr of Roman Catholic Church, Saint Philomena. It is one of the most important historical sites in Mysore and is frequently visited by tourists from all over the country. Being one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city, it looks even more beautiful in the evening sky and is given religious importance having a Neo-Gothic style of architecture which makes it all the more famous amongst masses. With the fame of being one of the largest churches in India, this majestic church captivates everyone with its architectural excellence. It also boasts of being the second largest church in Asia. Dedicated to Saint Philomena, St. Philomena’s Church is not only known for its architectural beauty and religious significance; it stands as an exemplary of secular viewpoint and the religious harmony which existed in Mysore. This can be seen from the fact that this church was built by Mysore ruler for the European residents in the city

5 am to 6 pm. is always better to visit in evening as then you can watch the church is being illuminated.

HOW TO REACH: This church is situated about 2 km away from the Mysore Palace. Quite close to the city bus stand with a distance of only 3 km between them and hence St. Philomena’s Church is easily accessible. Located on the Ashoka Road of Mysore, it can be easily accessed by road. Tourists can either hire a taxi or just take an auto rickshaw to the church.

JAYACHAMARAJENDRA ART GALLERY/ JAGANMOHAN PALACE ART GALLERY

MYSORE RAILWAY MUSEUM
Established in the year of 1979 by the Indian railways, Mysore Rail Museum is the second museum of its kind, after the National Railway Museum, which is located in Delhi. This museum boasts of a rich collection of photographs and various items depicting various stages in the development of Indian railways along with a captivating exhibit of locomotives. Previously most of the exhibits of the museums were kept at the Mysore Palace and later were shifted to their present place

HOW TO REACH: Mysore Railway Museum is easily accessible as it is located quite near to the railway station of Mysore. From the city centre it is about 3 km away. Tourists can hire cabs or auto rickshaw to the museum. If commuting by bus then also there won’t be any hassle, as many Mysore city buses run via railway museum.

KARANJI LAKE
This permanent haven of almost 147 species of beautiful migratory birds, with an expanse of cyan blue water across 55 acres, all clubbed with aviary, butterfly parks and museum on the bank would definitely seem magical for anyone with even a little knack for things that scream of history and nature. The ruler of Mysore had originally constructed this Lake not for sightseeing purposes but it actually served as a central multi utility percolation water tank. Famous for: Bird Sanctuary, Sightseeing, Photography, Walkers Point, Boating, Experience Seeking and Wandering, Wildlife Spotting, Paradise for Ornithologists, Connoisseurs. There is a watch tower that has been recently built to help the ornithologists have the most amazing time spotting birds.A nursery of medicinal plants allows you to take back home and tease your neighbors with rare, exotic varieties of plants and trees.The lake also provides you with boating facilities.In a separate section, called as the Butterfly Park you can chase down rare, really pretty butterflies. Nectar and host plants are grown here to attract butterflies.

MYSORE ZOO
Mysore zoo is one of the largest and finest zoos in India. Mysore zoo has a wide variety of both the flora and the fauna kingdom. Every year it attracts millions of tourists and is one of the most sought after places in the whole South India. The zoo is very well maintained and gives you the joy to enjoy the unrestrained beauty of wildlife and nature. By far, this is the only zoo in india which all the three species of Rhinos. The zoo also undertake cross breeding as one of its main objectives and there are very few zoos in India which practise this. This zoo has the highest number of elephants in its shelter in India. Mysore zoo is one such place where you can see the untamed beauty of the wildlife and untouched divinity of the nature. With over 168 species of flora and fauna, you will meeting some such amazing wild friends, you would have never thought existed. The zoo quenches your thirst as a travler. The neat and clean atmosphere provides you the biosphere where you could easily interact the world you have only seen in photos.

BRINDAVAN

BRINDAVAN GARDENS
About 18kms away from the Mysore city, towards northwest, in the land of Mandya is the sprawling, beautifully maintained Brindavan Gardens with its grassy green slopes and splurging fountains. Staged below the Kanambadi Dam and across the Cauvery river, they’re are the best elucidation of irradiated terrace gardens which had been originally constructed under the reign of Krishanaraja Wodeyar, the King of Mysore Topiary (cutting of bushes and hedges in the shape of animals), pergolas (pathways shadowed by creepers) and gazebos are especially noteworthy here and keep a look out for these. It took five years to complete this extravagant royal outing – from 1927 to 1932. When you come visit here, you find the beautiful Cauvery flowing alongside, on whose banks it is built. The Brindavan Gardens itself, garners near about a whopping 2 million tourists every year. Winters are by far the best time to visit the Brindavan Gardens. How to Reach First arrive at Mysore. Journey to Mysore through air is quite feasible with both Hyderabad and Coimbatore airports being close. Mysore is also connected by roadways to all major cities.

BANDIPUR NATIONAL PARK, KARNATAKA
Originally set up as a private hunting ground for the King of Mysore, this park eventually acquired the status of National Park and came under the umbrella of Project Tiger. Today, the Bandipur National Park is known as one of the most beautiful and well-maintained national parks of India. check: national parks in Karnataka), the Bandipur National Park offers a spiritual retreat. A walk along the woods amidst the mighty hills is an experience that shall soothe your soul. Best Time to Visit: You can visit the Bandipur National Park anytime time throughout the year. However, the strong rainy winds can sometimes be treacherous. The best time to visit this park is from November to June, when the climatic conditions are just right and many animals are around. If you wish to explore the variety of insects, the best time to visit would be either just before the rainy season (June) or afterwards (September).

NAGARAHOLE NATIONAL PARK, KARNATAKA
Located in an area of 248.41 sq miles between the Coorg, Nagarahole national park were the hunting reserves of the kings of Mysore. The area was turned into a sanctuary in 1955 after India became a republic, and was expanded into a national park in 1988, and was declared a tiger reserve in 1999. The park is also called Rajiv Gandhi National park, the Kabini Dam divides this park from the Bandipur National Park located at the northwest of this pa rk. Nagarahole National Park is mostly moist mixed deciduous forest in the Southern parts, Dry tropical forest towards east (Bandipur) and Sub mountain hill valley swamp forest. These kind of varied climatic conditions make this place a fauna haven, with animals such as Wild Elephants, Barking Deer, Sambar, Bison, Panther, Spotted Deer, Mongoose, Civet cat, Hyena, wild Pig and sloth Bear. Reptiles like King Cobra, Krait, the marsh crocodile, Python, Viper, Tortoise, Monitor Lizard, and Toads are also found here and is home to more than 250 species of birds such as Herons, storks, woodpeckers, sunbirds, wagtails, egrets,ducks, partridges, peafowl, lapwings, kites, eagles, falcons, sandpipers, warblers, babblers, shrikes and owls. Apart from the varied fauna, the park also houses various aborigine tribes. Although the sanctuary is open all year round, the ideal time to visit the sanctuary is between the months of June till November.

RANGANATHITTU BIRD SANCTUARY
Situated 19 km away from Mysore, this bird sanctuary is not only a place for bird watchers but a must visit for anyone who wants to spend some time amid nature. Located on the banks of Cauvery River, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is spread over 66 sq.km. This bird sanctuary gets its name after the Hindu God Sri Ranganatha Swamy. Its scenic beauty and rich avian fauna is worth experiencing. Apart from spotting rare species of Migratory birds belonging to places as far as Siberia, Australia and North America, you can also go for boat rides at the river. The view of surrounding greenery and serene water is worth experiencing.
